MSR & Burlington City Arts Presents...
5/18 @ The BCA Center

Madison Violet
w/ Maryse Smith (Solo)
Doors: 8, Show: 8:30
$10, ALL AGES

Since releasing, No Fool for Trying (2009), Madison Violet (Brenley MacEachern & Lisa MacIassac) won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, took home a Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, and were nominated for JUNO Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. The 2011 follow-up to their breakthrough successes The Good in Goodbye (True North Records) captures the duo’s growth and musical maturity. Their distinct take on Americana-inspired melodies beautifully contrasts with their breathtakingly personal lyrics, creating songs that blend nods to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch with radio-friendly flecks of The Court-Yard Hounds.

For an exhilarating glimpse into the future of rock piano, look no further than Marco Benevento—a melodically inventive musical adventurer who artfully employs pedals, amplifiers, circuit-bent toys and sundry effects around his acoustic piano set-up. Benevento has forged a fascinating repertoire of songs, including both wildly original compositions and renditions of those by the likes of Leonard Cohen, Pink Floyd and My Morning Jacket. The pianist has released three critically acclaimed solo albums that have led to a number of prestigious appearances, including Carnegie Hall, Montreal Jazz Festival and Celebrate Brooklyn. He’s also launched The Royal Potato Family, an internationally distributed record label that features a growing catalog of artists. Benevento is currently touring in support of his latest LP, Between the Needles & Nightfall, while working on material for his fourth studio album due in 2012.

MSR Presents
6/22 @ Signal Kitchen
Ben Sollee
w/ TBD
Doors: 8, Show: 8:30
$12 Adv/$15 Dos, 18+ - Tickets available at www.ticketfly.com

Ben Sollee is like no other cellist/singer-songwriter you have ever heard! His style is a mix of the Appalachian music he heard while growing up in Kentucky to the R&B style that fits his soulful voice and thoughtful lyrics. At the heart of Ben’s drive is the desire to bring communities together with music and he likes the idea of doing good things with good people. These ideas have been well received by other musicians, as his collaborations have shown. Ben has shared the stage and/or recording studios with the likes of My Morning Jacket and Bela Fleck. Ben has also embraced the idea of slowing down to appreciate the communities around him, so he embarked on the “Ditch The Van” tour, where he and his crew ride their bikes (and tow their equipment) from venue to venue to take in the sites, sounds and people around them.

Quilt

w/ TBD
Doors: 8, Show: 9
$7, 18+ - Tickets available at www.ticketfly.com

Although now firmly settled in New York City, Young Magic's three members came together through equal helpings of openness and fortuity. In 2010, singer and producer Isaac Emmanuel had left his home continent of Australia to travel across Europe, over to New York, and down through Mexico, all the while creating and recording music with whatever instruments he found along the way. It’s not uncommon to form a band while in college, and that is exactly what Quilt did. Its founding members, Shane Butler and Anna Fox Rochinski were visual art students at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, but bonded over their mutual love of weird, experimental jams and classic pop harmonies. Quilt is a band with strong roots that formed at the apex of the point in your life when you’re thinking about your own art and what it all means. Read more.

Fall.

“Let’s make a new record,” they say. “How do we do this? Let’s do it differently—let’s write a whole pile of songs and develop them big time before we go into the studio to record—let’s not do the fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants routine for a change—too crazy, too pressed. Let’s create in a cave, off the clock, take some time. Like normal people,” they say. “I’ll book the Treatment Room for rehearsals and demoing,” says Nic Basque. Read More.
